Best Time to Visit

Lake Louise is most accessible from June through September, when the lake is usually free of ice and the surrounding hiking trails are open. July and August offer the warmest conditions but also attract the largest crowds. June and September can provide a quieter experience with cooler temperatures. From December through March, the area becomes a winter destination for skiing, snowshoeing, and skating when conditions allow.

Travel Tips

  • Arrive early or use the available shuttle services, as access and parking around Lake Louise can be extremely busy during peak season.
  • Reserve shuttle transportation in advance when required, particularly during summer and early autumn.
  • Bring layers even on warm days because temperatures can change quickly around the lake and at higher elevations.
  • Walk beyond the main lakeshore viewpoint if time allows; nearby trails offer very different perspectives of the surrounding mountains.
  • Check trail conditions before hiking, especially in spring and autumn when snow or ice may remain at higher elevations.
  • Avoid approaching or feeding wildlife and follow all Parks Canada guidance while exploring the area.
