Best Time to Visit

Jasper is especially rewarding from June through September, when hiking trails, mountain roads, and most outdoor attractions are accessible. July and August offer the warmest weather but also bring the largest number of visitors. June and September are good alternatives for quieter trails and cooler temperatures. Winter is much calmer and offers skiing, snowshoeing, and snowy mountain scenery, although some roads, trails, and seasonal services may be limited.

Travel Tips

  • Give yourself several days if possible, as Jasper National Park covers a large area and many of its highlights are spread far apart.
  • Start popular hikes and scenic drives early, particularly during July and August.
  • Keep a safe distance from elk, bears, and other wildlife, even when animals appear calm or are close to roads.
  • Carry layers and rain protection because mountain weather can change quickly throughout the day.
  • Fuel up before longer drives through the national park, as services can be limited outside the Jasper townsite.
  • Check current road, trail, and wildfire conditions before setting out, especially when planning longer hikes or remote drives.
